Important note: the map utilises cutting-edge technology.
This has the unfortunate downside that slower machine users may experience a
lag between selecting some commands and seeing them implemented. Please refer
to the help
page for methods of increasing performance.

3. The Map
1. Navigation
![]() |
The mini-map at the bottom of the screen provides a
quick reference to which area of the city is being seen. The orange rectange
will move around with the main view, and re-size according to the map
scale. |
![]() |
|
|
The second method of navigation uses the arrow buttons to the right of the mini-map. On a mouse click the map will move up a pre-defined amount depending on the scale of the map. |
|
|
The zoom in and zoom out buttons are represented by a + and - respectively. On pressing, they will zoom the map in to one of five set zoom levels on the current view. |
|
|
The reset button is represented by a smaller square in the centre of the direction buttons. Pressing this will reset the position and zoom of the map to the original view of the city centre. |

2. Sites
The sites have been grouped into four categories, accessible through the top-most
pop-up menu which can then be individually selected through the lower pop-up
menu:
| All | This shows everything at once in the sub-menu. |
| Colleges | Only colleges are accessible through the sub-menu. |
| Departments | Shows departments and departmental libraries and the university museum. |
| Interest | Shows other sites of interest, such as theatres and the train station. |
Selecting any site
(by clicking) will display its name in the space below the pop-up menu below,
centre the map on that site's position and set the zoom to the second highest
level. Resetting the zoom will not clear this selection.

3. The Map
Selecting any site on the map will display that site's name in the display on
the bottom right of the screen.
Additionally, you may centre the map on the selected item, or zoom in on the
selected item using the cetre and magnifying glass buttons located next to the
name.

There are several different icons available to allow easy identification on
the map.
| Colleges are represented by a shield showing the University crest. | |
| Quicktime panoramas are represented by the faded yellow circles which become animated on moving the mouse over them. For more information on these see the main help page. | |
| Departments are shown by symbols such as a book or a "science" symbol appearing next to the building(s). Some buildings are spread over extensive distances, in which case multiple symbols appear in the appropriate places. | |
| Sites of interest are represented by a yellow exclamation mark. |
