Most Unix systems are connected as workstations in a
network. There are various commands and facilities available to users that
allow them to employ the network fully.
We describe several facilities here that are not available on all systems, sometimes because of the limitations of the machines involved, and sometimes through conscious decisions made by the network's administrator for reasons of security or performance.
