Postgraduate Study in Physical & Theoretical Chemistry

Applicants should contact the Graduate Studies Administrator (Aga Borkowska ) with any queries regarding the application process.

How to apply

The normal route to graduate study in Chemistry at Oxford is to apply for admission as a Probationer Research Student (PRS) with the intention of completing research over (usually) a 3-4 year period leading to the degree of DPhil; occasionally a shorter period of study may be appropriate and students may then submit for the degree of MSc by research; there is also a taught MSc course in Theoretical Chemistry .

Applicants should apply online, it is recommended that you read the notes of guidance before applying, as found here.

Applicants are strongly recommended first to make contact with potential research supervisor(s) before submitting a formal application. As well as describing possible research projects, the potential supervisor will be able to offer advice on completing the application form and may help with identifying possible sources of grants or scholarships.

Application Deadlines

Applications may be received at any time during the year. Applicants are advised to contact potential supervisors before submitting an application.

Important note for overseas students: you will need to secure funding for your study as most research grants are for UK or other EU* nationals only. For University scholarships for overseas students the absolute deadline is Friday, 18 January 2013; further information on sources of funding can be found on the University's website

Important note for Home/EU students:

Except in exceptional circumstances most decisions regarding Departmental funding will be made following the January round of applications (deadline: 18/01/2013).

We encourage all research candidates to contact potential supervisors prior submiting the application form, in order to discuss their area of interests / available projects etc.

Areas of current research

Funding from a variety of sources is announced throughout the year and we expect to have funded projects available in the following areas:

  • Structure at Interfaces
  • Theoretical and Computation Chemistry
  • Spectroscopy and Molecular Structure
  • Photochemistry adn reaction dynamics
  • Electrochemistry and electroanalysis
  • Biophysical Chemistry

Please see here for further details.

Students who have applied in the usual way will be deemed to have applied for these projects and no separate application will be necessary. Individual projects may also be separately advertised with their own cut-off dates; again, a separate application will not be necessary.
