The DHTML looping animation shown here illustrates the chemistry of bimetallic chromaphores. The absorption of a photon at the Ru(II) metal centre excites an electron which then is transferred via the conjugated ligand array to the Ru(III) metal. Thereby, oxidizing the first metal and reducing the second. That metal then emits a photon at a different wavelength as the electron moves down to a lower lying orbital.
