Reductive cleavage and related reactions leading to molybdenumelement multiple bonds: new pathways offered by three-coordinate molybdenum(iii)

Three-coordinate molybdenum(III) complexes comprise a new class of reactive-yet-isolable substances. Related to a well known class of metalmetal triple bonded dimers, the monomeric molybdenum(III) complexes supported by steric-ally- demanding N-tert-alkylanilide ligands offer previously unavailable synthetic routes to molybdenumelement mul-tiple bonds. Terminal nitride, phosphide and carbide functionalities have been prepared from reactions with dini-trogen, white phosphorus and carbon monoxide, respectively.
