Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry to work under the supervision of Professor Roel Dullens on a research project funded by European Research Council (ERC) for a fixed-term period of initially 2 years, with the possibility of extension.
The project is focused on the optical manipulation of interfaces, droplets and crystallites in colloidal model systems. In particular, we will use holographic optical tweezing and confocal microscopy to study interfacial phenomena, such as nucleation, coalescence and capillary phase transitions in phase separated colloid-polymer mixtures. By actively manipulating and controlling colloidal interfaces, droplets and crystallites in these systems we are looking to gain a deep and fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena in complex fluids.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic candidate who either already has a PhD in physics, materials science, chemistry or a related relevant subject area, or have submitted their thesis prior to taking up the appointment. The candidate should have expertise in 3D confocal microscopy and video-microscopy of dense colloidal systems, optical tweezing, image analysis and computer programming as well as a strong background in statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. Experience with colloid synthesis and characterisation is desirable.
The role will include managing own academic research and administrative activities, testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate and developing ideas for generating research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers.

The post will be based in the Oxford Colloid Group (headed by Professor Roel Dullens and Professor Dirk Aarts) of the Department of Chemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QZ.
Only applications received by 12.00 midday on 27 March 2017 can be considered.
The University of Oxford and Department of Chemistry are Athena SWAN Silver Award holders.
