Postdoctoral Research Associate  (Professor Chris Schofield)
Grade 7: 31,604 - 36,613 p.a.

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Associates to work under the supervision of Professor Christopher Schofield on a research project funded by ENABLE for a period of 12 months. The project involves developing new agents to combat antimicrobial resistance via a multidisciplinary approach employing state of the art assays, medicinal chemistry and microbiology. The focus will be on inhibitors of beta-lactamases. Find out more about Schofield research group at

You should have a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry or biochemistry/biophysics (or have submitted your thesis prior to taking up the appointment) with a focus on biophysical studies of macromolecules. You must be able to demonstrate competence and success in the thesis research area where appropriate with a strong publication track record, or other evidence of excellence.

You will have expertise in organic synthesis or protein sciences including experience with enzymatic assays and protein characterisation by biophysical techniques (e.g NMR Spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography.

The successful candidates will be responsible for the design and synthesis of inhibitors or of assay development/application for the overall project. You will test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate and adapt existing and develop new synthetic techniques and synthetic methodology.

You will be required to manage your own academic research and administrative activities. This will involve small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. You will be able to show ability to work supportively in a laboratory environment and to supervise and educate junior co-workers and take part in joint projects through co-operation and the exchange of information, skills and reagents.
