Quartz (Amethyst) is a low pressure/temperature polymorph of SiO2.

At high temperatures, quartz exists in the beta form, with hexagonal symmetry. At lower temperatures there is a displacive phase transition to a distorted structure with trigonal symmetry (alpha form).
