Ferrocene - Synthesis

Sodium cyclopentadienide is a common starting material for the preparation of cyclopentadienyl compounds. It can be prepared by the action of sodium on cyclopentadienide: Sodium cyclopentadienide reacts with d-metal halides to produce metallocenes.

Alternatively, in a teaching laboratory ferrocene may be prepared by reacting potassium hydroxide with cyclopentadienide, to form Potassium cyclopentadienyl which then is reacted with Iron (II) chloride and the resulting ferrocene slurry purified by sublimation.
