Trimerization of carbon monoxide to the deltate dianion has been achieved at room temperature and pressure by a U(III) compound. Quantun chemical calculations by Nilay Hazari, working with Green, have demonstrated that actinides are able to stabilize such a species through an agostic C-C U interaction. The work is described in Science and is also the subject of a perspective

A recent paper by Dr. Yann Astier and colleagues in the Journal of the American Chemical Society is featured as a Research Highlight in Nature Methods. The paper describes the identification of individual nucleoside monophosphates, which is a step towards single-molecule DNA sequencing.

Share of £1.9 M Grant for Biological-based Fuel CellsShare of £1.9 M Grant for Biological-based Fuel Cells

Professor Fraser Armstrong has received a substantial grant from a £1.9 M EPSRC Supergen Project for development of biological-based fuel cells, and is part of a consortium with other UK based research groups. This will support research into novel hydrogen fuel cells that use enzymes as electrocatalysts.

Wantage MP Ed Vaizey visited the Chemistry Research Laboratory on Friday 20 January as part of a nationwide scheme which pairs academics with Members of Parliament. Dr Simon Titmuss, Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory, spent a week in Westminster in November shadowing Mr Vaizey in his parliamentary and constituency business. On Friday the MP made a return visit to the University to find out more about Dr Titmuss’s research on the physics and chemistry of surfaces.

£2 Million Grant from Siemens Molecular Imaging Limited and DTI£2 Million Grant from Siemens Molecular Imaging Limited and DTI

A grant of £2 million from Siemens Molecular Imaging Limited and DTI has been awarded to Professor Jon Dilworth and Dr Veronique Gouverneur in Chemistry and Professor M. Brady of the Medical Vision Laboratory, Oxford, for the project 'Chemistry and Image Analysis for Assessment of Radiation Therapy using PET'. The programme will focus on the development of compounds of the radioisotopes 64-Cu and 18-F for imaging tumour hypoxia and new software for the analysis of the images and monitoring and management of radiotherapy.

Professor Baylay receives share of $4 Million grantProfessor Baylay receives share of $4 Million grant

The research groups of Hagan Bayley, here at Oxford, and Reza Ghadiri, at the Scripps Research Institute, have been awarded a joint grant of over $4 million from the Revolutionary Genome Sequencing Technologies programme of the US National Institutes of Health. The long-term goal is to enable the sequencing of a human genome for $1000 or less. The programme is described on pages 60-61 of the 19th December 2005 issue of Chemical and Engineering News.

Presentation to Professor Richard P. WaynePresentation to Professor Richard P. Wayne

A volume of papers published in his honour was presented to Professor Richard Wayne in Cambridge at a dinner on Wednesday 14 December 2005 attended by a group of distinguished atmospheric scientists. The volume was prepared to mark Professor Wayne's 67th birthday the preceding week and his impending retirement in 2006. Dr Michiel Thijssen performed the presentation on behalf of Elsevier, Amsterdam, who are the publishers of the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology. Professor Wayne was the founding Editor of this journal, and was Editor-in-Chief for more than 30 years. Drs Tony Cox and Tim Wallington were the guest Editors, and they collected together some 28 original scientific papers written in honour of Professor Wayne. Authors of these papers included former doctoral students of Professor Wayne, research assistants in his group and visitors to it, collaborators on national and international cooperative products, and several of those who had welcomed Professor Wayne into their own laboratories at one time or another. The papers in this dedicated volume covered a range of topics in laboratory studies addressing atmospheric chemistry, and reflected many of the interests that Professor Wayne has had during some 45 years of active research.

Professor Richard Compton awarded the Breyer Medal for 2006Professor Richard Compton awarded the Breyer Medal for 2006

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI ) has announced that Professor Richard Compton win be the Electrochemistry Division Breyer Medalist for 2006. The Breyer Medal and Lecture commemorates the late Dr Bruno Breyer, who was born in Czechoslovakia, educated in Germany, and later became a pioneer of AC polarography in Australia. The medal is awarded for internationally-recognized contributions in the field of electrochemistry.

A review co-authored by Drs Grant Ritchie (Royal Society URF) and Rob Peverall (EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow) from the Chemistry Department together with colleagues from the University of Bristol has been highlighted in the Annual Reports in the Progress of Chemistry (RSC) as the cover‚ article. The paper describes the recent developments in sensitive cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy using diode lasers in areas as diverse as plasma chemistry, aeronomy and breath analysis.

Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration between Oxford-Dundee-ImperialInterdisciplinary Research Collaboration between Oxford-Dundee-Imperial

Dr Mann (Imperial College), Dr Gouverneur (Oxford University) and Professor Cantrell (University of Dundee) have been awarded a 3-year grant of £840K by the BBSRC under the initiative 'Selective chemical intervention in biological systems'. The team will use a chemical genetic approach to identify protein kinase substrates. Dr Gouverneur has been allocated £354K as co-investigator of this research programme.

Hagan Bayley, Ben Davis, Neil Oldham and Chris Schofield have been awarded a 5-year grant of £1.6 million by the BBSRC under the initiative 'Selective chemical intervention in biological systems'. The funds are for the discovery of small molecules that can be used to explore the roles of the post-translational modification of proteins in living cells. The team aim to create an international resource in this area.
