Asymmetric catalysis
A paper by Rebecca Maksymowicz and Phillipe Roth from the Fletcher group has been published in Nature Chemistry. The work demonstrates that alkylmetal species generated in situ from alkenes can be used instead of premade organometallics in asymmetric catalysis. The process uses a new air stable copper catalyst, works at room temperature and shows remarkable tolerance to solvents and functional groups.

Pallado-Biology
A review of the emerging field of artificial biology mediated by palladium chemistry has highlighted the development of this field by the Davis group. Palladium-mediated carbon-carbon bond formation plays a revolutionary role in advancing organic synthesis. Recently developed biocompatible Pd catalysts have now allowed some of these reactions, such as Suzuki-Miyaura and copper-free Sonogashira cross coupling, to be performed on proteins in living E. coli cells.
