Virtual Tour of Oxford City Covered Market Oxford has had a market at the heart of the city for over a thousand years. It sprawled in all directions from the crossroads at Carfax. In an effort to tidy up the centre of Oxford, 225 years ago, John Gwynn architect of Magdalen Bridge designed a covered building. Originally (and still famous for) it only sold meat with over 40 butchers, but now sells a huge range of goods and is a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike.
