SUPPLEMENTARY SUBJECT

CHEMICAL PHARMACOLOGY

Organizer: Dr Grant Churchill
Department of Pharmacology
Email: grant.churchill@pharm.ox.ac.uk

This course will be run next year, but dates will obviously need adjustment.

Michaelmas and Hilary Terms 2009-10
16 lectures and 4 practicals

The Chemical Pharmacology course will provide students with a flavour of how the interplay between chemistry and pharmacology has contributed to the development of drugs. Such drugs have played a major role in advancing our basic understanding of basic biology and certain ones have proven revolutionary in the treatments of some diseases. The ultimate aim of this course is to inspire chemistry students to not only think about how chemistry can be applied to biological system, but to do research in this area. Ideally, students from this course will go on to synthesize compounds to treat diseases that have, so far, proven intractable. (And very likely get rich in doing so.) The initial lectures will provide a background and overview of the relevant physiology and pharmacology for those not well acquainted with these topics. Subsequent lectures will concentrate on specific physiological systems (e.g., communication between nerves and muscle), what chemical targets these systems provide (receptors or enzymes), and how a pharmacological understanding of these targets has been exploited by clever chemistry to develop useful drugs (e.g., antihistamines that don’t cause drowsiness). To keep things lively, certain controversial areas will also be touched on such as chemical warfare agents, so-called smart drugs that improve mental function, recreational drugs and addiction and why society harbours such disdain for the pharmaceutical industry.
