Magnetic Moments
The arrangement of ligands about the metal ion determines the qualitative
form of the splitting of the d orbitals. Therefore, magnetic moments can
help us deduce the structure of a transition metal complex.
In this part of the experiment, we attempt to gain more information
about the Nickel(II) complexes we have made by investigating their magnetic
moments. Before we do that, however, we need to understand how the d
orbitals fill in a transition metal complex and the electronic structure
of Nickel(II) complexes.
