The experiment objectives are:
  • To teach simple and useful methods for the  handling of moderately air-sensitive compounds using both inert-atmosphere and vacuum-line techniques
  • To show the nature of a typical organo-carbonyl compound
  • To demonstrate the application of 1H n.m.r. and infrared spectroscopy to the characterisation of organometallic carbonyl derivatives
  • To show a model carbonyl migration reaction. These migration reactions are important catalytic steps in the synthesis of aldehydes and ketones.
The experiment is divided into two main parts:
  • Part 1: The preparation of the compound.
  • Part 2: A study of its reactions.
