Fume cupboards

Ensure the fume cupboard is switched on before use. All experiments involving toxic vapours, boiling or distillation must be carried out in a fume cupboard. Chemicals stored in the fume cupboard, such as H2S, must be used only there. Do not put your head inside the fume cupboard unnecessarily when making adjustments to the equipment. If you need to leave an experiment set up in a fume cupboard between laboratory periods, leave a note on the equipment, giving your name, the date, and enough information so that a responsible member of the ICL staff will know the exact contents of any flasks etc. You must also ask a demonstrator to check that the experimental arrangement is safe to leave and to countersign the note. Such notes must not be re-used.
