Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2019

Stanley Whittingham, currently at Binghamton University (SUNY), has been awarded a share of the 2019 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for work carried out at Exxon in the 1970s exploring the possibility of using lithium titanium sulphide as the cathode in a rechargeable battery system making use of reversible intercalation chemistry. This paved the way for the future discovery of the high voltage LiCoO2 cathode by Goodenough, which was later integrated into a commercial full battery with the development of the anode system by the third co-recipient Akira Yoshino. Whittingham was an undergraduate in Chemistry at New College, Oxford in the 1960s and obtained his D.Phil. in Inorganic Chemistry with Peter Dickens. more........
