Background:

I obtained both my BSc and Ph.D degrees at the University of Sussex in organometallic chemistry back in the 1970s. I came to Oxford and originally worked at the Dyson Perrins Laboratory in 1999, having spent over twenty years as an industrial research chemist, employing molecular spectroscopic techniques (mainly NMR and IR) in the areas of organophosphorus chemistry, surfactants, petrochemicals, agrochemicals and enzymology. I have also gained experience in molecular modelling and which included work on biologically active molecules.

I have worked for the following chemical companies; Smith & Nephew, Shell Research Ltd., Standard Telecommunications Ltd., Albright & Wilson Ltd. In between jobs I also acquired a PGCE.

Having worked here in Oxford for 7 years, I very much enjoy the academic way of life and find NMR most satisfying and always interesting. I particularly enjoy solving stereochemical problems particulary using a variety of NOE experiments as shown in Poster 1. I have also been exploring computer assisted methods for structure determination based on 2D NMR experiments such as COSY, HMQC and HMBC as shown in Poster 2. Another interest is using NMR to probe catalytic mechanisms as shown in Poster 3.

Hobbies:

My hobbies include pottery (see examples), swimming, walking, gardening, antiques, going to art galleries and to the theatre - when I can persuade my husband Kevin to have a break. We have one charming and lovely daughter, Olivia who enjoys pulling other peoples' teeth out, has now become an enthusiastic dentist and will soon be married. We also have a demanding Persian cat called Pushkin.
