Steve Brogden
The Department of Chemistry was saddened to hear of the recent death of our former colleague Steve Brogden at the age of 82. Steve worked for many years as Stores Manager in the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory (ICL), and he also served the University as a Bedel and played in a silver band. Members of the Department remember Steve as being ever-helpful, efficient, unflappable and humorous.
John Deller, former Administrator at the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, said: “When I started in the ICL, I quickly learnt how important the support services teams were to the smooth operation of the department and research groups. Steve, alongside Bill Thompson, was responsible for stores and goods inwards, and he was a key member of staff, always displaying calmness. He knew the building intimately and was the go-to person for students and staff if they had a question, ensuring that the chemicals, solvents, glassware and so on needed for their research were always available. He enjoyed the interaction with people, helping the students and seeing them progress. Although situated in the basement of the ICL, Steve was never out of sight or short of visitors, and was always helpful. I very much enjoyed working with Steve and he will be sorely missed.”
Our thoughts are with Steve’s family at this difficult time. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday 23 December at 11am at St Hugh of Lincoln Catholic Church, Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Enquiries can be directed to C S Boswell Independent Funeral Services, Kidlington (Tel: 07865 373712).
