Dr Duhan Toparlak, Postdoctoral Fellow in the Bayley group, has been selected to attend the upcoming 73rd Lindau Nobel Meeting (Physics) from 30 June–5 July.

The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings take place annually, with alternating disciplinary foci.  Some 30-40 Nobel Laureates convene in Lindau to meet the next generation of leading scientists, including students and postdoctoral researchers.  Since their foundation in 1951 these meetings have developed into a unique annual scientific forum, giving opportunities for exchange between different generations and disciplines.

Duhan joined Hagan Bayley’s group in November 2022 as a postdoctoral fellow, supported by HFSP Long-term and Marie Curie Fellowships. He is also co-chair of the postdoc committee in Chemistry and a Tutor in Physical Chemistry in the Department of Biochemistry.  His current research focuses on single-molecule chemistry and functional nanopores for catalysis.  In the future he hopes to synthesize the first lab-made living cell made solely from non-biological components.

Duhan says: “My expectations from the Lindau Meeting are to observe, interact with, and learn from the most successful leading scientists. I particularly hope to gain insights on mentorship and how to start and sustain a promising academic career in the very long term.  Perspectives from Nobel Laureates will complement my current efforts and better prepare me for my first academic job. I am especially looking forward to meeting Ada Yonath, Walter Gilbert, and 600 other brilliant colleagues attending the meeting. Having already experienced diverse research cultures, I am eager to continue developing the right mindset to become a scientific leader and pioneer.”
