Dr Ewan Forsyth completed his BSc and PhD from the University of Aberdeen (2016 and 2020, respectively). His PhD focused on the organic synthesis and physical characterisation of liquid crystal soft matter, with a particular focus on twist-bend nematogens, under the supervision of Professor Corrie Imrie and Professor John Storey.
In 2020 Ewan moved to the University of Edinburgh as a Postdoctoral Research Associate on an interdisciplinary EPSRC funded project, working with Professor Mark Bradley. The overarching research developed new medical imaging technologies for improved non-invasive diagnostics for bone diseases. The chemistry focused on the synthesis of one-photon and two-photon fluorophores, their photophysical structure-property relationships, and implementation to bioimaging. Improvements to multi-photon bioimaging were explored using novel designed biological phantoms. This research was showcased at the prestigious Royal Society Summer Exhibition 2023.
Ewan was appointed to his current role as Departmental Lecturer in Practical Chemistry within the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory in 2024. His educational interests include the development of new practicals that forge links between chemistry disciplines, using research-informed and inclusive teaching practices. Ewan was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in January 2025.
