Antibiotics: An Organic Synthesis

Antibiotics: An Organic Synthesis is a hands-on laboratory workshop offered at KS4 and KS5 levels. It is designed to introduce Year 10–13 students to the principles and techniques involved in the organic synthesis of compounds with potential antibiotic activity.

Students will explore the challenge of antibiotic resistance and engage in a practical activity synthesising one of two pharmaceutically active compounds containing hydrazones – a functional group likely to be new to all participants.

Timings: Lab based workshop lasts 2.5 hours
