Building Bridges: Healthy Planet
The visit to Oxford by Year 5 students is designed to draw together learning from the Healthy Planet enrichment theme.
Students and their teachers will 'Meet the Healthy Planet Researchers' from the Chemical Synthesis for a Healthy Planet Centre for Doctoral Training in a series of interactive workshops at Wadham College.
Capable Catalysts: This session explores the importance of catalysts and their many uses. Students will experiment with how small changes can make a big difference to how fast chemical reactions can work.
Marvellous Metals: Metals are all around us. In this session, students will explore some of their amazing properties and examine a range of metals to decide which are best for different purposes.
Sensational Scents: This session explores the role of scents in nature, how good we are at identifying different plant scents and the problem of sulphur-containing compounds which can smell bad to humans.
Super Synthesis: Vitamins and medicines are found in many plants but how can we extract or produce them efficiently? In this workshop, students will experiment with solubility and temperature in vitamin C extraction.
In 'The Treasure Trove', students and teachers will explore the living collections of Oxford Botanic Garden, learning about the importance of plants and the environments they grow in. Different sessions will focus on medicines from plants, the amazing diversity of rainforests, plants that changed the world, chillis and citrus in the Conservatory.
Our visiting students and teachers will also enjoy lunch in either Keble College or Wadham College.
