Building Bridges: Into the Blue 2026

Bridge 7 of our Into the Blue enrichment theme is designed to draw together prior learning from this scheme through a visit to Oxford.

Students and their teachers will 'Meet the Into the Blue researchers' at Lady Margaret Hall.

Oxygen: Make it Visible; Catch the moment!: they'll explore how oxygen can be used to produce light, and how this light can reveal features inside living cells with The Rabe Group.

Decoding the Language of Plants!: they'll find out how plants at the Botanic Garden attract pollinators as well as how to assess the value of incense produced from bark with The McCullagh Group.

Precious Pigments: and they'll create their own cyanotype, determine the pigments used in one of the Ashmolean’s paintings using X-ray data, and use infra-red to ‘see’ fingerprints with Egyptian Blue.

In 'The Treasure Trove', students and teachers will explore the galleries of the Ashmolean Museum, visiting Ancient Egypt and Sudan, the Islamic Middle East, Pissarro and the Pre-Raphaelites - each gallery containing artefacts explored during Bridges 1-6, including the Great Bookcase, designed by the Victorian Architect and Designer, William Burges. A visit to Worcester College, formerly Gloucester College, allows our visitors to find out more about Burges, whose design of the Chapel was finished in 1864.
