A practical seven-step synthesis of muscarine tosylate [(2S,4R,5S)-4-hydroxy-5-methyltetrahydrofuran-2-ylmethyl](trimethyl)ammonium tosylate from L-rhamnose is described, which does not require the use of any protecting group. © Royal Society of Chemistry.
