Meera Mehta and Paul McGonigal awarded SCGC–FIRST funding for sustainability research

The MPLS Division has announced the SCGC Fund for Innovation and Research in Sustainability and Technology (SCGC-FIRST) 2025–2026 awardees, supporting high-impact research in sustainability, energy and advanced materials.

Two Department of Chemistry projects have been funded this year. Professor Meera Mehta will lead research into sustainable, transition metal-free phosphorus-based catalysts for energy-efficient chemical synthesis, while Professor Paul McGonigal will develop novel organic ionic materials aimed at reducing the energy demands of next-generation AI and machine-learning technologies.

These awards form part of a broader MPLS–SCGC partnership supporting ambitious, real-world solutions to global sustainability challenges.
