At the Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Environmental Sustainability held on 20th June in the Bodleian Library’s Divinity School, Chemistry was awarded the Sustainable Laboratories Championship Award for the way that the Department is integrating sustainable practice into its research – going above and beyond to effect real change. The nomination acclaimed the projects delivered by updating facilities, including pump replacements, fume cupboard upgrades, and the use of hydrogen instead of helium in gas chromatography equipment thus reducing both emissions and costs.

As well as this departmental award, individual groups were very successful in implementing the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) and achieved nine Bronze awards, 15 Silver and two Gold awards. The Department was also awarded the Beyond Gold Green Impact Award for the third time.  These are great rewards for the dedication of the many staff and students who are integrating sustainable practice into research.
