Oxford EPSRC CDT in Inorganic Chemistry for Future Manufacturing

The launch of the new EPSRC funded CDT - OxICFM

Established in 2019, the Oxford EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Inorganic Chemistry for Future Manufacturing (OxICFM CDT) aims to train the next generation of synthesis scientists. Our programme intends to address the national need for resilience, growth and innovation in key manufacturing sectors, by equipping and enabling a new generation of scientists to address critical societal challenges. A cohort of twelve students is admitted each year, who join a course that provides broad training across inorganic synthesis at different length scales (molecular, nano-scale and extended solids), followed by an individual research project that will provide them with in-depth research-based training in one area. The taught courses feature integrated industry/academic components for a holistic understanding of fundamental principles and the delivery of a chemical product.

The CDT has partnerships with nine companies and two national facilities – encompassing multinationals and SMEs, and spanning petrochemicals, catalysts, nano-tech, speciality chemicals, polymers and materials engineering. These partners include SCG Chemicals, Johnson Matthey, William Blythe, Siemens, Boron Specialties, Drochaid Research Services (DRS), Econic, High Force and Oxford Instruments; as well as ISIS and Diamond facilities. The industrial partners are instrumental in shaping the overall CDT ethos, providing a comprehensive, integrated training package and allowing for training that is relevant to a range of different business sectors and sizes. This consortium of partners covers a broad spectrum of chemical manufacturing (and business models/sizes), and offers each partner meaningful engagement with the student cohort.

There are a number of ways that you can get involved as a partner in the OxICFM CDT. For more information or to meet the CDT team, please visit our website or get in touch with the Programme Manager.
