The importance of understanding (pre)catalyst activation in versatile C–H bond functionalisations catalysed by [Mn<sub>2</sub>(CO)<sub>10</sub>]

Vibrational spectroscopy on time scales from picoseconds to hours unveils the activation pathways for the C–H bond functionalisation (pre)catalyst [Mn2(CO)10]. CO-loss, rather than Mn–Mn bond cleavage, give entry into a Mn(i)-based catalytic cycle.
