After reading Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, Saskia qualified as a youth worker and managed projects in the Borough of Newham, London, and then Southmead, Bristol, whilst undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma in Community Education. Youth work led to teaching and she taught in comprehensive, state grammar and independent secondary schools, firstly as a Teacher of Science, then Head of Chemistry, Head of Science and latterly Deputy Head (Academic).
Whilst working full-time, Saskia completed an MSc in Science Education with the University of Bristol, which also introduced her to the world of Higher Education outreach, and she volunteered on the Bristol ChemLabS programmes for a number of years during the school holidays, as well as developing programmes for primary outreach for her own secondary schools.
Saskia's experience of both formal and informal education was drawn on during her 3-year term on the RSC Science, Education and Industry Board as an appointed member (2015-18), and she joined the Department of Chemistry in 2019 in this newly created role.
She maintains an active interest in Chemical and Science Education research.
