A process for sepg. a compd. from a mixt. of different compds. is disclosed for compds. comprising at least two neg. charged groups connected by a linker group. The process comprises treating the mixt. with a material comprising layers contg. at least two different types of cation disposed in an ordered arrangement within each layer, such as layers of formula LiAl2(OH)6+, in order to sep. the compd. from the mixt. by selective intercalation of the compd. into the material. Thus, [LiAl2(OH)6]Cl was suspended in a 0.1M soln. of di-Na maleate and fumarate to absorb the maleate by intercalation. The intercalated fumarate was extd. by treatment with 0.1M Na2CO3.
