N-Bromosuccinimide in oxidative addition reactions with palladium(0) and platinum(0) precursors

Serrano JL, Zheng Y, Dilworth JR, Sánchez G

The oxidative addition of N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) to [Pt(PPh3)4] in a stoichometric reaction results in the formation of the succinimidato complex [Pt(Br)(NCOC2H4CO)(PPh3)2] (1) with displacement of two moles of triphenylphosphine. Reactions of NBS with [Pd(dba)2] (dba=dibenzylideneacetone) in the presence of PPh3 (1:2) or dppe (1:1) yield the complexes [Pd(Br)(NCOC2H4CO)(PPh3)2] (2) and [Pd(Br)(NCOC2H4CO)(dppe)] (3) respectively. The molecular structure of 1 was elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis revealing cis stereochemistry for the triphenylphosphines.
