A sterically hindered ferrocene ligand system was synthesized for the analysis of its unusual modes of corrosion with late transition metal centers. The ferrocene ligand was formed by the addition of a toluene solution of dimesityl disulfide to a suspension of dilithioferrocene in hexane under nitrogen atmosphere. The synthesis of a rhenium dinuclear species featuring the ferrocene ligand by the adoption of a binucleating role resulted in an unusual quasi-closed bridged structure.
