Prof Stephen Faulkner becomes Head of Department

Professor Stephen Faulkner becomes Head of the Department of Chemistry today, taking over from Professor Mark Brouard who steps down after eight years in the role.

Prof Faulkner’s research interests in Inorganic Chemistry are focused on the coordination and spectroscopy of the f-elements, and their application in the biomedical sciences. His research group works on a wide variety of aspects of this chemistry – encompassing synthesis, spectroscopy and methodology across fundamental and application-driven studies – and has wide ranging collaborations in Oxford and around the world involving physical scientists,
engineers and biomedical scientists.

Prof Faulkner is a fellow of Keble College, and has been in Oxford since 2008. He has previously been Associate Head of Department (People), and Head of Inorganic Chemistry. He has held
positions at the Universities of Manchester, Surrey, and Durham, and completed his undergraduate and DPhil degrees in Oxford. He grew up in the Lake District near Keswick, and now lives with his family in a much flatter, but equally rural, part of
West Oxfordshire.
